12:51 am - A Fine Seven-Day Tempest
It isn't news to me how "thin" the internet is. Sometimes a single upset person can have a disproportionate and nearly instant effect.

Barbara Bauer is a literary scam artist who preys upon aspiring writers. She got written up by Writer Beware a while back as one of the 20 Worst Literary Agents due to the number of complaints against her and not a single verifiable sale. It got posted around a number of places including a website called Absolute Write. Well she called the ISP hosting Absolute Write, JC-Hosting out of Nashville, and they're such a clueless bunch that on her say so they took down the website for DMCA violations (needless to say, there weren't any).

I'm fairly sure that nearly everyone reading my journal will have seen this before now, so I won't repeat what has been said elsewhere at places like Miss Snark. Suffice it to say that I suspect that most people and websites on the web are somewhat vulnerable to a complaint that sounds legit, so if a person like Barbara Bauer gets annoyed and can lie well enough there goes your website/journal/whatever. Check your ISP's terms of service.

Given what you wrote here, perhaps this should be F.O., yes-no?

Not really. If livejournal takes down my journal at the insistence of a con artist I don't want to do business with them.

There are enough of us posting about scam agent Barbara Bauer's attack on Absolute Write that she's going to be kept very busy making threatening phone calls to hosts. Apart from the Googlebomb, there is also now a Technorati tag: BarbaraBauer plus she's currently number 3 on Technorati's top searches.

"Do not meddle in the affairs of geeks, for they are unsubtle and will Googlebomb you."

No, that's the entire idea of posting the list. We're bigger than her, and we know the law. (I'm not posting the list because my LJ is only a book & DVD review site.)
